TCP timestamps

Dear fellow SwiNOGers, in the last few months we had several security audits and all of them proposed to disable tcp timestamps. (i.e. on Linux net.ipv4.tcp_timestamps=0). AFAIK roundtrip time calculation in tcp relies on this and there might be implications for PAWS (tcp sequence number wrapping). What do you guys think about this? Regards André

Hi, we are looking for presentations, tutorials, workshops, BoFs and lightning talk for the upcoming RIPE meeting in Copenhagen. The deadline for submissions is approaching soon (March 13), and we would be very happy to see your presentation submissions there. Marcus -------------------->>><<<-------------------- Call for Presentations A RIPE Meeting is an open event where Internet Service Providers, network operators and other interested parties get together. Although the meeting is mostly technical, it is also a chance for people to meet and network with others in their field. RIPE 72 will take place from 23-27 May 2016 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The RIPE Programme Committee (PC) is now seeking content proposals from the RIPE community for the plenary sessions, BoFs (Birds of a Feather sessions), panels, workshops, tutorials and lightning talks at RIPE 72. See the full descriptions of the different presentation formats, https://ripe72.ripe.net/submit-topic/presentation-formats/. Proposals for plenary sessions, BoFs, panels, workshops and tutorials must be submitted for full consideration no later than 13 March 2016. Proposals submitted after this date will be considered depending on the remaining available space in the programme. The PC is looking for presentations covering topics of network engineering and operations, including but not limited to: - IPv6 deployment - Managing IPv4 scarcity in operations - Commercial transactions of IPv4 addresses - Data centre technologies - Network and DNS operations - Internet governance and regulatory practices - Network and routing security - Content delivery - Internet peering and mobile data exchange Submissions RIPE Meeting attendees are quite sensitive to keeping presentations non-commercial, and product marketing talks are strongly discouraged. Repeated audience feedback shows that the most successful talks focus on operational experience, research results, or case studies. For example, presenters wishing to describe a commercial solution should focus on the underlying technology and not attempt a product demonstration. Presenters should indicate how much time they will require. In general, the time allocated for the different presentation formats is as follows: - Plenary presentations: 20-25 minutes presentation with 5-10 minutes discussion - Tutorials: up to two hours (Monday morning) - Workshops: one hour (during evening sessions) to two hours (Monday morning) - BoFs: approximately one hour - Lightning talks: 10 minutes The following general requirements apply: - Proposals must be submitted using the meeting submission system, https://ripe72.ripe.net/submit-topic/submission-form/. - Lightning talks should also be submitted using the meeting submission system (https://ripe72.ripe.net/submit-topic/submission-form/) and can be submitted any time up to and including the meeting week. The allocation of lightning talks will be announced on short notice---in some cases on the same day but often one day prior to the time slot allocated. - Presenters who propose a panel or BoF are encouraged to include speakers from several (perhaps even competing) companies and/or a neutral facilitator. - All presentation proposals will only be considered by the PC if they contain at least draft presentation slides (slides may be updated later on). VOIP: looking for a sponsor to provide us DIDs.

Dear swinogers, Zaledia.com is a not-for-profit organization based in Sion, Switzerland. We provide VOIP services to our members. Our goal is to allow IP telephony experiments, to help people discover what VOIP is and to provide individuals and associations an innovative communication infrastructure. We offer our services free-of-charge, and we support open source solutions and philosophy. Thus, we do not compete with any established telecommunications service provider. Constantly seeking to improve our services, we would like to offer to our members a free DID phone number, so they can be called from the PSTN (call origination only, we are not interested in call termination). As a non-profit structure, our financial resources are limited, that is why we are looking for a partner/sponsor who could provide us with a range of swiss DID numbers. Ideally, this block could be delegated to us free-of-charge, or leased for a minimum feee. (of course these numbers will never be rented for profit or sold to third parties). DNS Admin tool

Hi Swinog I guess all of us is in touch to administrate DNS Servers. And I guess Bind will be a popular one. In our situation, different admins, with different skill make changes on zone files. And some guys (. I cannot understand why.), don't like vi as administration tool. We're looking for a web based Admin Tool, to manage our zone files on two Bind DNS (Master, slave) Servers. If any possible, this tool should support zone based admin rights for external customers. What kind of tool do you use? Webmin? Plesk? vi? I found a lot of outdated and unmaintained tools, quite frustrating. Thank you very much! Cheers Adrian

Strange Messages on Linux

Hi Swinogers since a few weeks i see following messages on a server in Europe kernel:nf_ct_sip: dropping packetIN=eth0 OUT= MAC=00:23:54:d7:7c:12:80:71:1f:e2:71:81:08:00 SRC=191.189.9.153 DST=62.75.177.146 LEN=513 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=115 ID=27879 PROTO=UDP SPT=29012 DPT=5060 LEN=493 There are various IP´s causing this problem. In common: all IP´s causing those Messages are originating from a CGN Gateway The example above is an Brazilian Cableprovider. Client behind those networks complaining getting sometimes dropped calls, or one way speech in some cases not able to Register some of Sip-devices while others work. mostly in times the Kernel drop packets. Does someone have any idea what is causing this ? even why the hell an invalid MAC address could made it so far.

hotmail issues since 18/1 ?

Hoi zäme I have a couple of customers complaining they are unable to send emails to hotmail - typically they see rejects such as this: > 550 SC-001 (BAY004-MC5F11) Unfortunately, messages from 88.198.198.124 > weren't sent. Please contact your Internet service provider since part > of their network is on our block list. It doesn't affect all customers and checking our logs, it appears to have started 18/1. Prior to that we had no problems delivering outbound mails to hotmail, since then I see 149 bounces with the message above). The customers are on dynamic ranges from Swisscom, UPC and e.g. Virgin (in the UK). Looking for an OOB ethernet link in ColoZueri Room 4.2

Dear fellow SwiNOGers, we from the CommunityRack.org association are looking for someone who can provide us with an out-of-band ethernet link in ColoZueri Room 4.2. We need a single public IPv6 and/or IPv4 address on a copper ethernet link that we can connect to our management jumphost. Other than SSH we only do some puppet provisioning of the jumphost itself and some basic keep-alive monitoring. So bandwidth usage on the link should be pretty minimal (<100kbps). Anybody able to help us out? Cheers, André
